Serving Nature to bless the World

Updated: Nov 12

Ugandan farmer, Charles, shares his extraordinary story.

Charles Mugarura discovered his life-long passion early, when he was taught the principles of permaculture farming age fourteen. Despite the challenges of losing his parents young, Charles received extraordinary mentorship at Sabina Children's Home in the Rakai district of Uganda. They nurtured his interest in nature and encouraged him to follow his love of farming.

In 2012, after taking a diploma in computer science from Makerere University Business School, Charles founded a social enterprise dedicated to be a leading implementer of organic regenerative agro forestry. It follows the key principles of permaculture, including using renewable resources and services, catching and storing energy, and producing no waste.

"Our vision is to be a leading organic regenerative permaculture implementer," he says. "We share practice with local farmers about the importance of healthy soils, food and clean water and how to re-use waste. We do this because we are passionate about building resilient communities."

Charles has developed permaculture projects not only in Uganda, but also in Rwanda, Kenya and Germany.

The permaculture project Charles has designed for Sabina School.

He is still closely involved with Sabina Children's School and has designed a permaculture farming system there which currently feeds around 340 children a year.

"I found my passion early which is a calling to permaculture," says Charles. "My heart is to serve other people and the world."
